Assumed values
What values does your culture assume?
When I look at the city I live in and the people who surround me, these are a few things our lives (and sometimes our words) say are important:
- a well-plotted career path
- proximity to family (both geographically and interpersonally)
- an outdoors hobby
- home ownership
- a plan for the next project
- a voyeuristic online presence (involved but not too involved)
- church attendance
- full weekends (and weeknights)
All of these values can take their own moralistic bend for better or worse. The question, however, isn't "are these things good?" but rather "why are these things considered a given?"
Why don't we think critically about the currents in which we've chosen to swim? The movement of water is still taking us somewhere whether we consider it or not.
